Rumour has it that Blockbuster may be withdrawing from Europe, and is hoping to sell off it’s 700 strong UK operation for £300 million.
The rental chain, despite boosts with its online rental service, has struggled with changes in consumer habits as well as piracy and growing online rental and download-to-own services.

Fantastic - i hate blockbuster. They were never going to be able to compete with pay-per-view and the internet.

Also forgot to mention the rise of companies such as Netflix over in the States which is steadily growing in popularity. Don't know if the rental-by-mail thing is catching on in the UK?

Rental by Mail is catching on fast here. I'm a bit sad to see Blockbuster go. I've never used them, and yet there's something about that blue sign that I feel nostalgic about! Random I know!

I never joined them but clearly they were popular and took over most of the rental market in the UK during the 90s. But hey, they never had a copy of Back To The Future in stock so I shunned them and went elsewhere.

Well there's a reason not to join if ever there was one!

They never had anything. At first they were ok, they were so big and had lots of titles. Then they made lots of smaller stores and made some of the original ones smaller. It was either try to rent a new popular film and realize they never had it- or choose from the assorted c-list actor starring straight to video type titles.. which they were never short on. It was always a matter of time before a better option showed up and stomped all over blockbuster. But mainly i hate them for never having Back to the Future in stock.

Yes, I remember going there and finding myself staring blankly at the walls of videos starring C.Thomas Howell (who?), D.B Sweeney (what?) and people like that who starred in really super films and then went on to be guest speaker on Disney DVDs.
I particularly hated the adverts for them - but loved the bright blue and yellow colour scheme obviously.

Who wouldnt love that beautiful blue colour, augmented by that lovely overhead strip lighting?
