Was 'Syriana' confusing because I'm stupid or because the director messed up?

I saw Syriana the other day. It was very enjoyable and thought provoking, I hope we see many more politicly-charged films like this in the future. I really like the whole Participant Productions ethos and I hope we see a similar institution setup here in the UK... anyway... that's not what I'd like to discuss right now...

More often than not we know more about the film we are going to see than we need to. It leads to us being conservative in our choices and stops us from appreciating film's greatest pleasure: spontaneously responding to what is happening on the screen.

Romance and Cigarettes

This is a great gem of a find!

At first I was skeptical, I thought little of the title, which is far too close to Coffee and Cigarettes, and I couldn't imagine the cast being all dancing and all singing. But within the first few minutes I happily ditched my skepticism and began to enjoy the film. It is superbly cast, and very well crafted!

I obviously saw an unhealthy number of films in Berlin and have lots of recommendations, but in the interests of brevity ... the Iranian film OFFSIDE was such a smart little picture that I have to insist you all watch it at the earliest opportunity.
