So 'tis up and online - excellent.

"Budgeting" only has 1 "t" by the way.

Hi Stephen!

Wow - our first post from a "real" person! I feel like we should send you some sort of prize!

Thanks loads for the spelling tip - I've changed the offender.

How's life over on redcamera.net?

Stephen W

Slow. Not much to talk about till NAB!

Just had a look at Drupal thanks to your site - might have a go at using it for a "proper" redcamera site come April.

Yeah, Drupal is good. I can recommend it. It takes a bit of getting used to though. I think it's mainly meant as a "coder's" content management system... in other words, you have to dive into the code to do a lot of the customisation.

Karel Bata

Apparently not...

Well it's all the regulars in here now!

After all the chat and (no doubt) late nights and sweat, here you finally are. Best of luck.

Let's see if this works:

BTW Have you noticed the very critical post over at SP today?

Karel Bata

How did that end up the wrong way 'round?

Tweaks needed here...

I used the tags, which are now not visible, and posts are now in this order:

I was referring to the < i m g > tags. Or will that disappear too?

Hi everyone and welcome to UKFilm.org,

It's great to finally have finally made this site public, and have some users. It's been a lot of hard work to get this up and running, and on top of it all I managed to get myself a new job a few weeks ago, so I've had to be concentrating on that. So please bear with us while we iron out the last few creases.

High on out list of improvements are to get the Calender working as soon as possible - hopefully this week, and to finish the styleing of this forum, which is only about 75% done at the moment.

Anyway, thanks, for dropping in, and please keep leaving us feedback so we can fix and improve things as soon as possible. (And then we can hopefully start talking more about films and less about websites ;-)

Ed.

Hi Karel!

Welcome to UKfilm.org!

Thanks loads for posting and testing - that's exactly what we need right now.

links:
Automatically turning URLs into clickable links should now work, thanks for letting us know about that.

pictures:
We're using a mark-up language called Textile in the forums. To insert pictures (which we encourage because it makes posts so much more interesting) you just encase the image URL in exclamation marks:

This code:

Produces this:

(nice!)

quoting code

If you want to quote code in your posts then you can surround the code with <pre></pre> tags.

editing posts changes date

Yes, this is a tedious bug. It seems that editing a post will set the timestamp of that post to the time of the edit which will screw up the ordering. I'll look into that today (the Drupal comment module has been a bit of a pain: it's quite buggy)... but no fear, with your help we'll get the site working perfectly very soon!

Angry post on SP

No, I hadn't seen that! Wow! I'm surprised. I was warming to Lee's sense of humour and quite like it now.

Thanks again for your help,
Keep up the good work!
Jack

Stephen - good work figuring out the links. Which reminds me - we need a "formatting guide".

Hmm... I'm not usually such a vain sod but I can't find an avatar I like. Perhaps this one's a bit too enthusiastic?

Hello Stephen and Karel and welcome to UKF!!

It's really great to see so many posts already!!

Jack - I like your avatar! [Hmm I need to find one too!]

Karel Bata

I think you look completely demented. But that's cool...

So now we have UKFF and UKF. You don't think people will get confused?

--------------------------------
www.ukfilmforum.co.uk

Jack

Jack's picture

Hmm, now that you mention it - maybe I do look a little nuts in that picture. I promise I'm not. Really. My girlfriend likes the picture and she's the closest I've got to a "style consultant". I'm bloody useless at self-styling on my own.

Will people get confused between UKFF and UKF? Um, I expect some people will get confused, yes. But the majority wont. The sites look different and do different things.

What are your plans for UK Film Forum? Are you going to re-open it? If you do then I'd be very eager to explore ways in which to support each other. We'd be friendly neighbours! There's plenty of space on this 'ere t'internet for the two of us.

Jack

edeverett

edeverett's picture

Abbreviations...

It's worth pointing out that we didn't copy UKFF I promise—we're just weren't very original with our selecting our own name ;-)

Personally I don't much like the abbreviation UKF, it doesn't save much on UKfilm (hardly a mouthful), it takes the meaning out of our name and, as has been pointed out, could cause confusion.

Jack

Jack's picture

Yes, I agree. I prefer UKfilm over UKF.

Karel Bata

Karel Bata's picture

Problem there is that you might be seen as setting yourself up as speaking for THE UK film industry. Know what I mean?

I was wary of that and can only be accused of touting UKFF as THE UK film forum (till now ) But I got there first!

In fact on forumco. (my forum hosts) for part of the url to be UKFilm.forum I had to use the name UKFilm, and then realised that it wasn't wise to use that as an ID (which was the default) and created ukff as an ID to act as voice of the administrator.

There's also another ID there I have reserved for really heavy tasks called The Supreme Being

Did you follow all that?

BTW, how do you get italics here?

--------------------------------
www.ukfilmforum.co.uk

Jack

Jack's picture

I've written a quick guide to textile on the FAQ . You get italics by putting underscores before and after like _this_.

"Problem there is that you might be seen as setting yourself up as speaking for THE UK film industry. Know what I mean?"

Oh, we'd never claim that we speak for the UK Film Industry or that we're the only forum for the UK film industry - we're well aware that folks like SP, Netribution, OTT and you had forums running before UKfilm.org came along. We decided to go for the name "UKfilm.org" because it's catchy and because it's the least scope-limited name we came up with.

Peace and happyness
Jack

The name is also very simple and self explanatory! Always a bonus!

Cyril

Hi. I like the site and I'm looking forward to this forum getting nice and full! Good luck with the publicity.

Andrew Gale (not verified)

HI guys.

I really like the site. Could in time become a genuine one stop shop for all your UK based film needs. I'm looking forward to watching the site grow and having something interesting to post. I'm doing a bit of work with a charitable foundation called Winter College up here in Wales, getting troublesome kids off the streets and into the studio. Been very promising so far. We're applying for more fundiong to run more courses, so I will let you know how that turns out and any lessons we learn that could be of help.
Andrew

Jack

Jack's picture

Hi Andrew! Welcome to UKfilm.org and thanks loads for the kind words.

What's the film scene like in Wales? Is there much of an industry there? The only experience I have of wales is a short film I produced there - it was a great experience as everyone was so friendly and helpful and a lot of things were excellent value.

Your project sounds very interesting. If you or your students would be interested in writing an article or even just a little news item for UKfilm.org then that would be awesome.

Thanks,
Jack

Andrew Gale (not verified)

Hey Jack,

Film Scene is looking pretty intersting up here really. Theres lots of stuff going on down in Cardiff, but there is a surprising amout of activity here up North. There are a couple of features being developed and Sgrin Cymru have actually started giving out funding to films after several years of rather odd choices. But lots going on, and I shall update you guys when things start getting specific.

Andrew

Jack

Jack's picture

Fantastic, thanks Andrew. Keep us updated.

Once the site has settled down, we're planning to add a "blog" section for people to keep film-related diaries. When that happens, would you be interested in being our "man in Wales"?

dantheman

dantheman's picture

Guys, I like it,

Clean cut and do the point :-)

I'm filming a series of 5-10 minute segments for a friends internet TV station as well as working on machinima and greenscreening to produce movies....

keep up the great work.

Hi Dan,

Welcome to UKfilm.org and thanks for your kind words! I'm really pleased you think the site's "clean" - that was an explicit design goal!

Best of luck with your friend's Internet TV station.

Thanks,
Jack

Andrew Gale (not verified)

I can be you 'Man in Wales', but only if I get to wear a Mac with a big collar and talk like Dirk Bogart.

Jack

Jack's picture

Awesome... I'll email you. You can wear a Mac only if you also submit an avatar of you in said Mac. ;-)

charlie (not verified)

Dan, I actually like a little filth.

Anyway...

Liking the site about to have a little flick through all the contents. I would definately be interested in doing a feature for you...might have to be in the shape of an anon blog as my tongue/type could get me in trouble.

Lapog (not verified)

Hi Jack,
Very nice site.
Could you tell me how you made Table of Contens which is on article http://ukfilm.org/features/shooting-super16mm

Thank you for answer.

Have a nice time.

Jack

Jack's picture

Hi Lapog,

Thanks for your message. Glad you like the site - Ed did the design and I did some of the PHP hacks.

The TOC is a hack of the Drupal paging.module. Here's my hacked version (remove the .txt extension). It wont work out the box for you - you'll have to do some tweaking.

Best of luck,
Jack

Lapog (not verified)

Thank you, Jack
I will try it.

Thanks Swirly, and welcome to UKFilm.org!

It's great to get feed back like that, it's been a lot of work to get it to this stage, and it feels like we've hardly got started—if only I didn't have a job...

I'd also like to encourage everybody to join in the discussions on the site. The rest of the UKFilm.org team have been writing some great content, and that's what the site is really all about.

Cheers,

Ed.
