Romance and Cigarettes

This is a great gem of a find!

At first I was skeptical, I thought little of the title, which is far too close to Coffee and Cigarettes, and I couldn't imagine the cast being all dancing and all singing. But within the first few minutes I happily ditched my skepticism and began to enjoy the film. It is superbly cast, and very well crafted!

Here's the synopsis from Icon's site :

"Set in contemporary America, ROMANCE & CIGARETTES is a modern day musical, a dark and passionate comedy which tells the story of one man's journey into infidelity and redemption. It stars JAMES GANDOLFINI as our hero Nick Murder and revolves around the repercussions of his adultery and doomed fascination with the flame haired seductress Tula (KATE WINSLET). For Kitty (SUSAN SARANDON), Nick's long suffering wife, his treachery is the final straw. With faith in her husband shattered she surprises even herself with the ferocity of her anger as she struggles to cope with his betrayal. It is only through a tragic twist of fate that Nick finally understands the extent of the pain he has inflicted on his family. With time running out he discovers the essential value of Kitty's love and respect."

Zara, are you serious!! I thought it was ok but not funny enough to stop manic depression inducing my evening.

It also really irritated me the way you could still hear the original artists in the background while the actors were singing.

Nice to see Kate Winslet breaking the mould a bit tho.

Hey Annie!
Yes I am serious - but I think you have to be in a very specific mood to appreciate the film - I never really found it to be funny, just surreal enough to get my attention. They could've made the effort to get instrumental versions of the songs - I agree it was a little irritating to hear the original vocals. What I enjoyed about the film was Kate in such a random role for her (Tula and Nick in the motel room? you've got to admit that was funny!), and Susan was great too.

And it's not the best film to stave off depression I agree!
