Credits: "made by" or traditional?

On your films, do you prefer all the filmmakers to be credited in the traditional way like this:

Director: Jim
Producer: James
DP: Jemma

etc...

Or do you prefer:

Made By:
Jim
James
Jemma

Personally, I've been involved in films which have tried both ways of doing it. I've noticed the second "made by" version is becoming slightly more accepted now. Or am I wrong???

Would you be uncomfortable with a "mady by" credit where viewers can't distinguish between runners and directors? It has quite a cool, lefty feel to it. But maybe it's just a bit disrespectful to those crew members who worked a thousand times more hours than some of the other crew members?

My last film uses the credits "Made By" for a few reasons. First is the obvious - with everyone working for free, and people working damned hard regardless of whether they may technically have been "Grip", "Cinematographer", "Writer" etc. it seemed a good way of levelling the field as far as ego's are concerned.

Secondly, I was trying to avoid turning myself into Rodriguez/Carpenter et al by crediting myself a zillion times for various things I had done (Director, Writer, Producer, Editor etc. etc.).

This worked OK for me and is something I may stick to in future. Of course, at some level it will probably start to become a Union issue in which case I'll revert back to crediting people individually.

Hi,

I remember at Oxford being loosely involved with a project that the director saw as a collaborative effort, but which had his very personal stamp... Its true that these collaborative efforts can seem cool and radical, but they need to be underlain by actual communal commitment.

Everything I've been involved with has used the traditional designations (barring the video installation, where traditional designation doesn't really exist AFAIK).
