The buzz word at the moment is citizen journalism. CNN provides these journalists with their own weekly program, the BBC invites people to submit their news, and July saw the first Citizen Journalism Awards. Of course Citizen Journalism is nothing new, but the demand for this type of content appears to be on the rise. So much so that it is being branded as a genre - 'social media'.

With the revolution of web 2.0 it would seem that an increasing number of organisations are beginning to depend on User Generated Content (UGC). The Nokia Shorts Competition invites both professional and non professional submissions, whilst establishing itself in the film industry by affiliating itself with BIFA . The ever increasing number of low budget filmmaking courses and developments in digital technology, all appear to be leading to the same evolution of society – anyone can do anything, nothing is beyond anyone’s reach, and everything is accessible. This of course is not limited to film and media, but to all creative arts. To be honest, I’m in two minds about it.
