Piracy in Czech Republic

Warner Bros have decided to stop distributing home video to the Czech Republic. Apparently, a combination of piracy, a 14% increase in VAT, and a new legislation which required home entertainment distributors to give 3% of their profits to the State Fund for the Support and Development of Czech Cinematography, makes the business unprofitable for Warners in that territory. They will continue theatrical releases though.

Cannes Selection Announced

With less than a month to go, here's the official selection. There's plenty of cause for excitement.

Competition films include the latest from Almodovar, Coppola (Junior), Del Toro, Linklater, Loach and Moretti - to mention a few. Other points of interest include Richard Kelly's first writer-director creation since Donnie Darko.

View Sundance Shorts Online

This is really cool: Sundance are showing a selection of short films & docs from the 2006 festival on line. If you care, my only slight gripe is that the thumbnails on the table of contents are in the wrong aspect ratio and some of them are stretched. But hey ho, I don't mean to be grumpy... I congratulate Sundance for putting shorts online.

View the films here

It was a clean sweep at the Genies for Quebecois film C.R.A.Z.Y. last night. The film got ten out of twelve gongs for which it was nominated.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television's prestigious awards were hosted by Lisa Ray and Terry David Mulligan.
