A (very) short film about a disastrous ballet audition scooped a prestigious BIFA (British Independent Film Award) at a glittering ceremony in London last night. The super-short film, by Katherine Taylor from London was voted winner of the 2006 Nokia Shorts competition by the judges and won the BIFA for ‘Best Fifteen Second Short’.

Last night saw stars and leading figures of the British film industry turn up to celebrate the British Independent Film Awards at Hammersmith Palais, London.
In its ninth year, the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) have established themselves as one of the most important awards ceremonies in the British film industry and are regarded as the kick-off to the Awards Season. The BIFAs celebrate the best of British talent, including Helen Mirren who is this year’s Variety UK Film Achievement Award recipient.

Resfest, the digital film festival will be running at the NFT until Sunday before touring the country in this, its tenth year.
Festival activities include screenings of shorts and features, seminars, educational sessions, live music and A/V performances, parties and interactive entertainment.

Now here's a challenge - make a film which is no more than 15 seconds long!
The Nokia Shorts 15 Second competition launches this Thursday at 18:30 at the Cineworld Trocadero. The event features a Q&A with Kevin Macdonald ( Touching The Void ) and a retrospective of 40 previous entries. How often can you say that you've seen 40 films in under 25 minutes? Summer makes most people think of holidays, especially students. And students on holiday often think of making short films (well at least those who are interested in film do). So why not combine all of these things and go to the second Short Film Summer School (SFSS) from July 12-15 at the Curzon Soho.

Richard E. Grant's directorial debut Wah-Wah will open the East London Film Festival on 27th April.
Don't miss The Death of Mr Lazarescu, Romanian writer-director Cristi Puiu's profoundly moving 150-minute masterpiece. It has screened at festivals around the world (including London) since making a big impression at Cannes 2005, and no UK theatrical release has been confirmed. Catch it on Sunday 30th April.
