Quick Links

Links are what makes the internet great, so here are a few for your browsing pleasure:

Is this the inspiration for the Sony's bouncing balls?
http://www.e-cr.co.uk/crblog/?p=300

"Ubois cites a recent European video-archiving study that found TV tape storage begins to degrade after 20 years. That means 70 percent of existing TV footage will be gone by 2025. Imagine if 70 percent of existing books were going to be burned by 2025." The problems faced by US television researchers

User Generated Content

The buzz word at the moment is citizen journalism. CNN provides these journalists with their own weekly program, the BBC invites people to submit their news, and July saw the first Citizen Journalism Awards. Of course Citizen Journalism is nothing new, but the demand for this type of content appears to be on the rise. So much so that it is being branded as a genre - 'social media'.

Three Links

Opensource animation:
Free Jack is providing all their .fla flash source files and bitmaps for use under a Creative Commons license.

"We love animation and we just know you do too. We're proud of Odd Job Jack and we've put lots of work into our show. Our art deserves to live beyond broadcast and who better to give a free gift to than the entire planet?"

BBC's "Creative Future"; a film buff's question

Director General Mark Thompson's RTS speech on Tuesday is well worth reading in full. If you'd rather bleed, here's a summary: digital's impact on the future will be "disruptive" but ultimately brilliant.

A couple of film related links that recently caught my attention:

And you thought you're job was insecure already? You'll soon be replaced by robots anyway...

First Response

We have a new article on film criticism:

More often than not we know more about the film we are going to see than we need to. It leads to us being conservative in our choices and stops us from appreciating film's greatest pleasure: spontaneously responding to what is happening on the screen.

You never forget your first time...

The Missing Millions In UK Filmmaking

I couldn't resist linking to this thought provoking article over on ExplodingCinema.org... here's a quality excerpt:

"I mean get this ...you pay taxes which funds the state agencies, then you buy a Lottery ticket and that money goes to the agencies who make films with it and then you go to the cinema to see the film which costs you £6. So you pay three times for these films and they're not even any f***ing good!"

Video On Mobiles & What It Means For Us

This morning, BBC News 24 carried a story about sending TV news to mobile phones. Apparently the good guys and gals at the BBC Interactive department have been looking at ways of sending TV news to mobile phones. They ran a test in Oxford. Pete Clifton from BBC Interactive said that the Oxford test "...showed that people would use a handheld device to watch the news in video and it's our plan over the next year to roll out more of these video services to good devices around the country".
